Texas Renegade Outriders
The Texas Renegade Outriders proudly joined the historic Salt Grass Trail in 2024, marking the fulfillment of Kacey Stewart’s dream to create a wagon rooted in friendship and the love of her family tradition of western trail heritage and keeping the spirit of the trail alive. Wagon 22 was founded by nine dedicated charter members: Kacey Stewart, David Russell, Mandi Cary, Cash Cary, Jeb Burris, Christina Mulvey, Joel Dawson, Christine Dawson, and Gabriel Ashworth. Each member brings years of experience, unique talents and contributions, making the Texas Renegade Outriders a welcoming home for families and friends dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Old West.
The strength and success of the group lies in their membership consisting of approximately 120 members. With some traveling from across the country and all around the state of Texas. The group’s camaraderie flourished to the extent that a second wagon was added to their ranks their first year.
The head wagon boasts a storied history. Formerly the lead wagon for Texas Independence, it was later acquired by the Hughes family before becoming the Texas Renegade Outriders’ flagship wagon and joining the Salt Grass Trail.
The second wagon is a remarkable piece of history in its own right. Originally a 1909 International Harvester farm wagon, it was converted to a covered wagon. In 2022, this wagon retraced history, traveling nearly 600 miles along the Great Western Trail, echoing the journeys of cattle drive wagons from Buffalo, Oklahoma, to Bandera, Texas. Now, it rolls in parades, trail rides, and special events under the expert care of Debra Slate who owns and operates Wagon Rides of Bandera.
In 2024, the Texas Renegade Outriders celebrated milestones that will be remembered for generations. They were deeply honored to receive the 2024 Oldest Male Rider Award, presented to the legendary “Rider In The Sky,” John E. Heineike. They were privileged to have John complete his final Salt Grass Trek alongside them, a moment they will always cherish.
Additionally, the Texas Renegade Outriders proudly earned the coveted Best Appearing Group Award at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo™ Parade during their inaugural year—a significant achievement and true testament to their spirit and dedication.
